Hunter Valley 1921. After being jailed for horse stealing, onetime circus star and extraordinary horsewoman 23-year-old Jessie Payne is released on bond to farmer Fitzgerald “Fitz” Henry. Jessie finds herself in an isolated outpost of soldier-settlement farms, which depend on Fitz for survival. Jessie is determined to avoid trouble, but Fitz has other plans. When his advances fail to win Jessie, he rapes her. Jessie finds herself pregnant and trapped. One night in a drunken rage, Fitz tries to strangle her. Jessie kills him in self-defence. Desperate that she and her child will live free, Jessie flees to the mountains. Branded a murderess with a price on her head, mother and tiny premature baby are now on the run. To find the freedom she craves, Jessie must elude the law, the mob who seek revenge … and the only man who can help her.
